Confidence is the solution to economic recovery say UK Ministers - 27 April 2009

Now is the time for the UK to start looking forward with confidence- building solutions

LONDON 24th April, 2009 – FTI Consulting, the parent company of FTI Brewer Consulting, the dispute resolution and contracts specialist, hosted a breakfast briefing at the London Stock Exchange to discuss pathways to economic recovery. A select group of FTI Brewer’s construction industry clients joined UK Ministers Lord Mervyn Davies, Lord Malloch-Brown and Baroness Jo Valentine, at the briefing that unanimously agreed that the key to bringing Britain out of the current downturn in a competitive position is confidence.

Speaking at the event, Lord Davies of Abersoch, Minister for Trade and Investment, described how the world is at an inflection point and whilst mistakes had been made, the UK’s response must neither be anti-business nor anti-success. With the UK remaining the top destination for inward investment in Europe and second in the world after the US, he concluded by saying: “Whilst in the UK we have a tendency to talk ourselves down, now is the time to talk ourselves up”.

Lord Malloch-Brown, Minister for Africa, Asia and the UN, agreed that we needed to start looking forward to recover. Reflecting on his recent experience at the G20, Lord Malloch-Brown highlighted how today’s world leaders came together with a genuine desire to work towards a global solution to the economic crisis rather than simply protecting their own national interests, in a way we have not seen since 1945.

He also stressed the importance of confidence not just in a global recovery, but in ensuring the UK does not lag the world in that recovery: “Contrast the UK with Asia, where some countries are seeing a sharper contraction of GDP, but there is a greater feeling of confidence that they will get through it, and this is something the UK needs to start feeling too.”

Geoff Brewer, Senior Managing Director of FTI Brewer Consulting commented : “We are delighted that we are able to offer our clients participation at this type of high level debate, via our parent company FTI, and that we are providing a forum for the construction industry to contribute with an equal voice alongside financial leaders."

The event was attended by nearly 100 UK business leaders, 35 of which were from the construction and property sector. Also taking part in the panel discussion moderated by Baroness Jo Valentine, the Chief Executive of London First, were:

• Dominic DiNapoli, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, FTI Consulting, Inc.
• John Waples, Business Editor, The Sunday Times
• Toby Courtauld, Chief Executive, Great Portland Estates
• Declan Kelly, Executive Vice President and Chief Integration Officer, FTI Consulting, Inc.
• Chris Osborne, Senior Managing Director, Economic Consulting, FTI Consulting, Inc.
